Why Rug Size Matters
A rug does more than add colour or texture to a room — it anchors the space, defines zones, and ties furniture together. Get the size wrong and even the most beautiful rug can make a room feel off. Too small and it looks like an afterthought; too large and it overwhelms the space.
The good news? Choosing the right size is straightforward once you know the rules.
Standard Rug Sizes Explained
Australian homes typically work with the following standard rug dimensions:
- 120 × 170 cm — Ideal for small bedrooms, entryways, or under a coffee table in a compact living room
- 160 × 230 cm — The most versatile size; suits medium living rooms, dining rooms, and master bedrooms
- 200 × 290 cm — Perfect for large open-plan living areas or generous dining settings
- 240 × 340 cm and above — Statement sizes for expansive rooms or to define a large seating zone
- Round rugs — Great under round dining tables or as a feature in a reading nook; common diameters are 150 cm and 200 cm
Room-by-Room Guide
Living Room
The most common mistake in living rooms is going too small. Aim for a rug that fits at least the front legs of all your main seating pieces. For a full floating look — where all furniture legs sit on the rug — you'll need a larger size, typically 200 × 290 cm or above.
Rule of thumb: Leave 30–45 cm of bare floor between the rug edge and the wall.
Dining Room
Your rug needs to be large enough that chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out. Add at least 60 cm to each side of your dining table dimensions. For a standard 6-seater table (around 180 cm long), a 270 × 360 cm rug is ideal.
Bedroom
For a queen or king bed, a 200 × 290 cm rug placed two-thirds under the bed (from the foot) creates a luxurious feel underfoot when you step out of bed. Alternatively, use two smaller runners on either side.
Hallway
Runners work best here. Leave 10–15 cm of floor visible on each side. Standard runner widths are 70–90 cm; length depends on your hallway.
The Tape Test
Before you buy, use masking tape or newspaper to mock up the rug size on your floor. Live with it for a day — walk around it, sit in your usual spots, and see how it feels. It takes five minutes and saves a lot of second-guessing.
Common Sizing Mistakes to Avoid
- Going too small — The most frequent mistake. When in doubt, size up.
- Ignoring furniture placement — Decide whether you want all legs on, front legs on, or all legs off before choosing a size.
- Forgetting traffic flow — Ensure the rug doesn't block doorways or create trip hazards.
- Not accounting for rug pad thickness — A quality rug pad adds grip and cushioning; factor it into your planning.
